The application is for a simple, non-encrypted protocol like finger or gopher. I don't think nc does two-way comm but socat does and I've down something similar with that. I'm not familiar with Lua so can't comment on that. Multi-threading isn't really critical but I just happened to notice the fork(3am) extension and thought I'd play around with it.
