This *might* be the salient difference between your setup and mine. In my 
experience, dynamic linking (even when using libtool) is a question of luck 
when there are old libs hanging around in the dynamic library path that have 
the same name. 

The version I put on the net compiles with version 3.4.4 of the gcc, and 
usually the gcc gets more (and not less) picky over time. So I rule out a 
problem there.
