try M-x set-background-color, and when prompted choose something
like cyan or wheat, etc. to see your choices, try
M-x list-colors-display.
to change syntactic colors, look at the function set-face-background.
for example,
(set-face-background 'font-lock-keyword-face "Yellow")
(set-face-foreground 'font-lock-keyword-face "Black")
