It looks like you have $(shell ...) operations that are not
well-formed.

You can try enabling debugging mode to see if that gives you any more
clues.

Other than that you'll have to add the make equivalent of "printf", I
guess; something like this:


  $(shell echo "got to this point" 1>&2)
