There was nothing extraordinary in the config changes in 8.1-1:

Basically, it was just setting "colonparsing" on by default, as can be
found in the following commit:

Additionally, Benno made another change to stop starting nano with
modern bindings if invocation starts with "e":

Before accepting a new version of the config file, it's wise to check
the diff between both.

I suggest you revert to your version, which you hopefully still have in
/etc/nanorc.dpkg-old, and try again. That, or please post your config
so we can know more.
