the bug report for the file permission issue would be "Eli Green is a big 
dummy".
I was trying to run it without specifying an image! Obviously this was causing 
problems.

In theory it should not. It would just load the image from /usr/local/share/smalltalk without any permission denied errors (it does that under Linux). If you can run ktrace, that would help.

Glad that you found a workaround though.
