I made it pass -std=gnu99.  I meant to do that a while ago.  I am fine with
using any C99 or GNU extensions you feel like.  That's why we're GNU.  It
is fine now to be compatible only with GCC 3.2 and later (and we can add a
configure check to enforce it if there is any need).
