Seriously, though, are you concerned about data integrity, server
throughput, hard drive bottlenecks, or what?

Hmmm... seems to me the operations will have to appear random to the server,
but still be predictable and manageable so that the files can be easily
tested for integrity. I'm not aware of any scripts like that (but that's not
really a good measure of whether they exist or not :-).
