The exact error msg is this:

cvs [login aborted]: authorization failed: server <server name> rejected access

However, I think I've just found the problem, and it's not related to being local, but to a problem in my CVS client (1.10):

It *does* work if I make sure (by launching the server appropriately (probably, not sure how to try) or through an SSH tunnel) that the client can connect on the default port...

i.e. the following CVSROOT works:

:pserver:<user>@localhost:/<cvs root>

However, when I need to access it on a different port, and specify the CVSROOT like this:
:pserver:<user>@localhost:<port>/<cvs root>

It does NOT work anymore... After some more research, the problem seems to be that the port is interpreted to be part of the path...

So, my question is twofold:

- Can I specify a port number without upgrading my client? (if it's a bug in the client)
- When using inetd.conf to launch the server, how can I specify the port it should listen to?

And additionally, but more in general: How can CVS be made a bit more verbose? apparently, it gives the same error message as above when I let it login to a port no service is listening on...
Alternatively, can I make it keep logs of every connection attempt for example?
