excluding module subdirectories

Hi I'm using an alias to exclude some recently obsolete subdirectories from one of our modules.

It works fine for checkouts but when I update I use -dP because I want to get newly added subdirectories.

Unfortunately this doesn't seem to respect the exclusion list of the alias that the checkout was done with.

Anyone know how to exclude subdirectories for both checkout/update without ignoring newly created subdirs?
