free windows cvs client

Hi,

I am trying to find a free windows cvs client that will let me
checkout, modify and check in a single file from a cvs repository. Do
you know if there is an easy one to use. I have not had success with
wincvs and I cannot check out single files with Tortoisecvs. I looked
at previous mails here and most of the other ones seem to cost money.
The software is to be used in an academic research institute.
