Reboot? Really? I recommend to start emacs in debug mode (emacs
--debug-init) but more importantly, from a (X windows) terminal, so you
can kill that if emacs becomes unworkable. Can you switch to the console
"ctrl alt F2"(and return with "ctrl alt F7") to kill the emacs process
without needing to reboot? (ps aux | grep emacs and then kill $ID, the
process ID, the second number, something like 12035, thus: kill 12035)

Set debugger on Error and debugger on quit/C-g (in the menu under
Options) and try to exit the hung Gnus by hitting C-g.
