Not that I know of.
You can bind something like
(lambda () (interactive) (gnus-summary-mark-article nil ?R))
to a key in `gnus-summary-mode-map'.

Don't. Despite its confusing name (hey, it wouldn't be Gnus if it made
sense!), `d' marks articles with `gnus-del-mark', not `gnus-read-mark'.
