I've just made a fork so I can keep track of my changes.

Here's my changes, with your comments applied:

There's also one other fix in here for when the user specifies a span:

(There's a lot of mixed tabs and spaces in the code. I'll leave it up to
you guys if you want to fix that.)

The result works, and the tests pass.

I guess we should do a test on Linux and NetBSD before we start thinking
about getting my branches in shape for merging.

Are you able to do the Linux testing?
