I can't say I've reviewed the entire patch, but the idea looks great! I was
worried for a second that you were breaking source compatibility, but I see
that you've taken care of that too:

I'm okay with this patch, however I'd like to see a shipping libtool-1.6
sometime, we will need to feature freeze and branch eventually :)
