Much of the shape-note tradition is aimed at amateurs. It's trying to get a strong community-wide music tradition from minimal educational resources. For that 1969 book, the level of music training behind it is probably higher than many of the others.

There is also a successor, "Hymnal: A Worship Book" from 1992.
