You say you have mixed feelings, but I think (with your updates to
compilation), those feelings are ever less mixed?

Thanks a ton for your investigation into this. This is a game changer:

MSDM-reduced

1.8: real 0m14.788s
2.2: real 0m14.648s

les-nereides:

1.8: real 0m1.376s
2.2: real 0m1.224s

Let's kill 1.8 support.
