Yes, they both are.  You probably want

    c'4. (maybe c'-.)

or something like that.  Have a look at the tutorial:

These symbols are generated in PostScript.  Do they appear on the
printed output (paper?).

What viewer do you use, what version, what version of ghostscript (gs)
do you have and how do you convert the .ps to .pdf?

You could try upgrading to 1.4.12.jcn1, and upgrade to gs-6.50-2 and
gsview-3.6-2
