Indeed. And I appreciate you correcting them.

Right. I had a look at the code and there's no way to change those
automatically created voices. They use a function called make-voice-
props-set and unless it can be overridden, the behaviour can't be
changed.
The application is drum notation where the note's position on the staff
doesn't determine the stem direction. It would be nice if lilypond had
a mode for this, but I didn't see it anywhere.
