RE: [Linphone-developers] Real-time text in Linphone

Real-time text is supposed to be transmitted time sampled in 300 ms intervals. This gives the reader the opportunity to take part of the text as it is created and therefore keeps the thoughts of the session participants better aligned.

 

The transmitting party does not need to hurry up, and the recieving party does not need to sit in vacuum fancying about what next sentence will be. They are in contact all the time.

 

 

Technically it is an RTP transmission, so it does not load the SIP call control infrastructure with media as SIP Message does. It scales better.

 

The packetization is more efficient. SIP Message easily takes 500 bytes each even if the useful text load is only a short message, while a Real-time text packet is a small RTP packet, usually around 70 bytes or so.

 

These factors make it suitable for real-time communication and is usually used in combination with audio and video in sip sessions.

I am interested to add ( or see added ) the real-time text RTP medium to Linphone. That requires extension with one more RTP media stream, declared by m=text and a RTP handler for it.

Has anyone looked into such issues before. Does it sound straightforward or complex with the current RTP implementation in Linphone?
