There is no hurry to push it.  I have it on a branch, it won't
go away.  And I'm waiting for other people to give their opinion
about it -- about how things should look, how they should work.
Changing this afterward is awkward.

I think it will be best to use coloring, like vim does.

But... how come that computing the margin changes from +3 to +1?
A difference of 2, when only one character is removed?  Ah!  In
your lined version the margin is one too big: there's always a
space before the line number, even before the widest one.  That
space shouldn't be there -- it wastes space.
