Attached a quick revised edition: version 1a.  The only changes are:

* The initial cleanup of indent/unindent is done in one patch instead of
two.

* An inconsistency in unindent is fixed.  Instead of trying to be clever
about highlighted final blank lines (which was not done for indent), it
drops that check and just gives a status bar warning to indicate why it
can't indent.
