Follow-up Comment #39, bug #62847 (project octave):

"IIUC, the paths that are stored in the load path are canonicalized. I don't
recall the exact reason for that."

If I remember correctly, the reason was that with symbolic links, a single
real directory could have multiple names but it seemed to me that it is only
reasonable to have a single name for any directory in the load path and that
should be the actual name of the directory, not the name of a symbolic link.
