Follow-up Comment #1:
Minor axes are displayed as semi-transparent lines by default.
Maybe your graphics card driver has trouble displaying those.
Try changing the axes property "minorgridalpha" to 1 to see if this makes a
difference.
It might also help to use software rendering if the hardware drivers cause
troubles.
This report is marked as a regression. But IIUC you write that it doesn't work
with an old and with a new version for you. So, in which version did it
regress for you?
