Follow-up Comment #9, bug #63281 (project octave):

Sorry, I could have used something smaller than 10x10...

Anyway, what happens with & instead of +?  Is it the same with some results
full and some sparse depending on whether both arguments are sparse or if one
is full?  What about | vs. &, do they behave the same?
