There are still more changes to make to handle shortcuts in the gui_settings
class and to eliminate references to the base_qobject object where possible. 
I hope to be able to work on those changes within the next week.

I'm also marking this report as in progress, even though I think the issue is
fixed for the 8.1.0 release.  I'd like to leave this open until I've pushed
all my pending changes.  Thanks.
