Follow-up Comment #4, bug #63453 (project octave):

There have been lots of examples where Matlab just does something for no good
reason other than it is an artifact of their implementation.  Octave generally
tries to match any documented behavior.  But undocumented behavior, which
could change at any time, we usually don't bother with.  I think Octave's
preservation of input size makes more sense than Matlab so I wouldn't change
it myself.
