Follow-up Comment #2:

If I copy paste your code in a command window I obtain the very same error as
you do. This indicates that the parser couldn't interpret the "−" character
(U+2212, "minus sign") ... Octave only supports ascii "-" (U+002D,
"hyphen-minus"). 

Now the question is how did your original minus signs "-", that used to work
in a command window, get converted to non ascii "−".
