Follow-up Comment #8, bug #64033 (project octave):

I *suspect* the issue is that some libraries (octave itself in particular)
were build with  (Apple's) clang and some (packages)
with true gcc. I think Apple lies to you and pretends that 
its clang *is* gcc. 

In any case this appears to be a Homebrew (?) problem. 
You should talk to them.
