Follow-up Comment #40, bug #64033 (project octave):

of course, all the packages were reinstalled (rebuilt) for the new Octave
build.  

The Octave build (with -verbose) feedback seemed to imply it used clang
(gcc=clang), so I am confused about that.  Seems like there would be
incompatibilities with packages, that I think are built with the gnu
compilers.  Whatever, the problems I saw previously seem to be all gone.
