The more I read this report, the more confused I am by the tags. I'm changing
them to something that reflects the fact that we end up with an infinite loop
due to the behavior described by comment #10.
The core item that is not clear to me is the tradeoff implied by comment #10.
Right now the Octave code is self-consistent at the cost of creating an
infinite loop for x(10) = foo. Matlab doesn't have that but their behavior
might not match their docs based on comment #5 which may or may not be still
applicable.
It would be nice to avoid such an unexpected infinite loop. Is there a way to
do that without losing consistency?
