Follow-up Comment #1:

Have you run 'make install' and are then running the resulting binary which
might be in /usr/local/bin or similar?  Or are you using the 'run-octave'
script in the build directory?

Similarly, are you running the CLI version of Octave (octave-cli executable)
and getting these errors or the version of Octave with GUI libraries linked in
(octave executable).

And do you invoke Octave with any command-line arguments such as "--gui" or
"-f"?
