Follow-up Comment #43, bug #65431 (group octave):

Well, it only needs to happen if the algorithm  is looking to the vertices
list for mapping cdata color information, which it seems like it shouldn't do.
Color can easily jump across faces when using the size(xdata) form. If it
wasn't specified in that form, then there's no cross-face jumping to preserve
and the size(xdata) form will have identical colors at all of the repeated
nodes.  Also, as a compatibility issue vertices remains unchanged in MATLAB,
as its the only matching value I still think that is related to the idx crash
jwe pointed to below.
