Follow-up Comment #1, bug #65550 (group octave):

I failed to mention two things.

After Octave starts poorly (having produced the previously mentioned message
box and with its help pane empty), the next time I start it, this

    [documentation_widget]
    browser_zoom_level=1

has been changed to this

    [documentation_widget]
    browser_zoom_level=11

in %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming\octave\octave-gui.ini.

And although Octave doesn't crash visually, the experiment causes Windows to
create, for example,

    octave-gui.exe.10168.dmp
