actually it wasn't a RAID at all, just a JBOD, and the tester was writing a
custom app to write to each disk in parallel (simplified RAID0).
performance improved substantially after some tweaks, to about 200MB/s

I suspect that performance per disk was limited by the controller to an
extent, and contention between the disks on the wire. performance per disk
(and maybe even performance overall) may actually improve with a slightly
smaller number of disks. :)
