While I agree with you on the above, I must point out that languages change and evolve. The word "condescending" originally meant that an upper class person was willing to "come down" and talk with a servant, peasant or other lower class person as an equal, and was meant as a compliment. Quite the opposite, I think you'll agree, from how it's used now.
