Sync itself is NOT using commercial software. It offers SyncML, which is a
standard being more and more available. The problem is that some client do
not support SyncML. So: "just" write a SyncML client software for those
clients under GPL and there you are. If you prefer you can write as well a
"generic" software which uses self-written plugins for Palm, WinCE, Outlook,
Lotus Notes etc etc to SyncML and plug that in. It will not be feasable to
write a whole new sync engine; and it would be rather useless, as SyncML is
more and more widespread. With either solution you will have to write a
special adapter/plugin for every special device you want to support.

Obviously, this does not seem to be very fast or easy, otherwise those
things would be available by the dozen. :-(
