My problem is that some tables are maintained by an
external system - and when trying to insert an ID to a
table (example 'phpgw_addressbook') I get into problems due
to the auto-incrementing ID. A common problem (I believe)
to RDBMS other than MySql - and I really want to keep the
ID from the other system. I think it should be preferable
to use a function to insert the next ID for tables of this
importance.

I don't see the value in this. Is there a particular
scenario where you would find it more useful than an
identity field?
