I think this action is currently possible using the javascript addressbook
(activated within the email user preferences section) within the email app.

Summary: Ability to mass customise e-mails using fields from Addressbook
Original Submission: I am using phpgw in our company to coordinate 6 offices
around Asia.
We currently maintain a client database of several thousand names to which we
regularly forward our company newsletter. This is currently done using a
dedicated client contact database called Time&Chaos in conjunction with Express
Plus, an e-mail client which allows personalised e-mails to be sent to any
selection of contacts and using any fields from the contact database. I would
love this feature to be available from phpgw.
Express Plus basically reads the T&C database directly and uses it as its
default addressbook.
Whilst on the subject, T&C, and therefore Express Plus, use a great category
system where you can mark any contact with multiple categories and then select
groups based on combinations of categories, e.g. I often want people in say
"Hong Kong" who are "Accountants". This is very easy to do.
Have a look at www.chaossoftware.com - you can download trial versions of the
software if you want to see how this works firsthand.
Cheers,
Brett
