find . -exec touch {}\; then make >/dev/null this updates the modifications on
all files so they will all be compiled, then runs make, but since I send
stdout to dev null only the warnings and errors get printed.

agreed.
btw I'm happy to take a look into patching stuff we use that is non
portable / non posix if you don't have time.
