I think it should be directly user configurable. I've had numerous
problems in the past where paplay kept getting substituted because of
the multiple outputmethod deal not working correctly if a system
doesn't have pulse installed. I my case, I want to use aplay because
I have ALSA installed and really don't know about the different sound
architectures to try anything else. I even was curse about JAC but
dunno if that will work with speechd at all or not. At least ALSA
works for me.
