English doesn't have singular gender-neutral pronouns, except for "it",
which is used for things. They / them / their are plural.
Unfortunately, pronouns have become a political issue, and nobody will
be happy with the one you choose. I usually pick one of the
gender-specific pronouns and stick with it. If I'm of a mind to make
the feminists happy, I choose "she".
