Here I have /usr/share/espeak-ng-data/voices/mb/mb-$VOICE instead.

But have not espeak installed, just espeak-ng.

I could work at it, but would need help to find the paths for all
synthesizers using the generic module, as I have just espeak-ng, pico
and the mbrola voices installed.

Ideally, yes. But that could be at least a workaround that distributions
could decide to implement.
