That's a great idea, and there's also another project idea hidden in
there: E-Bon management. The GNU Taler wallet already needs to manage
users' purchases and sync them in a privacy-conscious way.
There are already some shops in Germany (like Rewe) where you can,
instead of getting a wasteful paper receipt, use their app to receive
the E-Bon. What's terrible though is that this is just covering up
another customer data collection scheme, they require you to give your
payback card, otherwise you won't receive an E-Bon.
Maybe for smaller businesses this would be a use-case for Taler even if
no e-cash is involved. You pay, and then scan a QR code or NFC tag at
the shop's counter. If scanning fails or there is no internet, a paper
receipt is printed (potentially with a QR code where you can add the
receipt to your wallet later). If scanning succeeds, the wallet
contacts the merchant backend and downloads the E-Bon.
This way even people/businesses that are not primarily interested in the
E-Cash aspect would have a reason to use Taler ;-)
If somebody wants to apply with this idea for the next Prototype Fund
round, I'd be happy to help with that. That sounds like a great match,
it has privacy and environmental protection (no dead trees for buying a
pretzel) in there.
