I cannot reproduce it here with 

GNU Emacs 23.1.91.1 (x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu, GTK+ Version 2.18.3) of 
2010-01-24 on detlef

Could you, please, start again "emacs -Q", and enter the characters
exactly as I did:

C-x C-f / s s h : 1 9 2 . C-g <escape> x v i e w <tab>
l o s s <tab> <return>

You see, at the end I have called "M-x view-lossage", in order to show
the entered characters. Please do the same.
