Hi Michael,
Sorry for the delay (too many things to do this WE).
It's fine for me. I think this is less ugly than the hash.
Just one question about the defconst. Is it possible to override it with an 
eval-afterload ?
I ask, if by any bad luck, I found a file (or a dir or a symlink) with five / 
...

I'll be soon in holidays, I wonder if you're interested I'm working to add BSD 
support switch (-f) for stat ?
