I am indeed an idiot.

It works as it's meant to inside a math construct.

For some reason, I figured it wouldn't know about these, so just assumed I was inside a math construct if I was in latex-math-mode as opposed to latex-mode.

It happens anytime. I create a new buffer, switch to latex-math-mode,
and type `a or `I or whatever. Works fine, just adds opening and
closing brackets.

Do you type that within a math construct, like $...$ or
\begin{equation}...\end{equaction}?
