Actually I'm not sure it's possible to write one (since the
dirlist path is hardcoded).  Maybe modifying tests/defs like you
suggested would be enough to check that it works.

The patch will go on HEAD, definitely (branch-1-6 is for bug
fixes), but it shouldn't hurt much if you prefer to work
against 1.6.2. 

Note that HEAD requires CVS Autoconf (Autoconf 2.53b will do too).
