I don't
have any jtag hardware yet, but if the Olimex dongles work
with Linux tools, they look like the way to go.

Keep in mind that this is a clone of the fairly old first version of
the Atmel JTAG ICE. The list of AVRs supported by that device is
quite limited.

There are two devices at the Olimex web site, AVR-JTAG and AVR-USB-JTAG.
For the first one they say: "Note this is not AT-JTAGICE-MK2 and
supports only ATmega16, ATmega32, ATMega323, ATmega162, ATmega169,
ATmega128 microcontrollers."

For the AVR-USB-JTAG they say: "program all AVR flash microcontrollers
which supports JTAG, completely analog of ATJTAGICE (AVR Studio thinks
it works with original ATJTAGICE)" and "works with AVR STUDIO for
programming, real time emulation, debugging, step by step program
execution, breakpoints, memory dump etc everything all high priced
emulators do"

So does your comment apply to AVR-JTAG, or is there still some
functionality missing from AVR-USB-JTAG that the JTAG ICE mkII
provides?
