--report is --verbose: it decides what goes into foo.output. --trace
is just dumping random information on stderr. It's been precious to
me while debugging various issues. --trace would have been --debug if
--debug didn't already have a different meaning.

I understand this, but it makes me feel bad wrt translators. That's
additional work, and because it's additional work, I also feel less
inclined to change the output. Which should not happen for
development material.
